Chapter 12 of "Multimedia Making It Work" is designed to give a fairly intensive overview of the internet while highlighting specific features that may be important to designers of web pages. It focuses on "obtaining, installing and these applications and utilities" that allow things to be designed on the world wide web (Vaughan 358).
This chapter does not detail things about the internet that do not encompass the aforementioned statements--such as servers, or how to connect to the internet--but instead focuses on necessary tools to build web pages. The chapter, entitled "The Internet and Multimedia", does not mention many necessary things needed to navigate the internet but does mention places where those resources can be found. "Visit your local bookstore, where, along with the work you are now reading, you may discover as many as a hundred helpful volumes about all the simple and arcane aspects of the Internet. Buy one or two of them and dig in" (Vaughan 358).
Things like internet history, internet addresses, connections, the bandwidth bottleneck, internet services and MIME-types among other things. This information should help you to design a web page and navigate those pages once they are finished.
